Mark Oliver's, a practicing artist and film maker, production goal is to shed light on the participation of thousands of African Americans who came to California during the gold rush. Mark teamed with the Shasta Historical Society and received a generous grant from the California Humanities Foundation. The project’s first performance on April 6th, will showcase local actors from Mount Shasta and Redding, performing short vignettes of life in the gold fields from the African American perspective. The production will also include presentations from the former curator of the Oakland African American Museum, Rick Moss, and authors Sharon McGriff, John Grider’s Century, and Sylvia Roberts, Mining for Freedom. This should be a fascinating evening highlighting a portion of California’s history that has long remained untold.Â
