Shasta Historical Society in conjunction with the Shasta Union High School, Shasta County Office of Education, and Shasta College Foundation invite you to join us for a presentation of the historical context that led to the genocide of the Native California People. Between 1846 and 1873, California’s Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Dr. Benjamin Madley is the first historian to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. Dr. Madley's deeply researched book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.
Born in Redding, California, Benjamin Madley is associate professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles. He focuses on Native America, the United States, and colonialism in world history. He holds a B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University and an M.St. from Oxford University. Books can be purchased from Shasta Historical Society prior to the event at cost, for $15 (paperback) and $23 (Hardbound). A limited number of books may be available for purchase the evening of the event. A book signing will take place after the event. The event is free to the public.
